Incandescent light bulbs have lasted forever and changed the world, but they will likely not long exist before too long. Incandescent light bulbs produce heat better than they create light and use much more power than is ever required. Lower watt bulbs that fix these problems have emerged, but they also have some negative aspects to look into.
One of the most popular bulb types that has been replacing traditional bulbs is fluorescent lights. Fluorescent bulbs shine the same light while using a fourth of the energy at most. They also have a massive life span that can last many times what a regular bulb can. The main reason that these lights were not used widely before is they had to have a small ballast to produce the light. Power companies in lots of states have even subsidized the cost of these bulbs since they are generally a bit more expensive than a conventional bulb.
The problems associated with these bulbs are also necessary to know. The principal thing is these bulbs have the extremely toxic substance mercury. Once the light is on a while, the mercury will become gas form, and if the bulb is broken the vapors can be inhaled and potentially kill someone. Even though it is not a direct issue, these bulbs generate UV radiation which has been found to bring about skin cancer and destroy the eyes.
The newest kind of light is actually not new whatsoever, but before was used as very low powered indicators. These LED bulbs actually use less electrical power and are much simpler than their counterparts. These bulbs are also being used these days in televisions and small device screens given that they can be so bright in a small area. These bulbs are not dangerous and last considerably longer than fluorescents. LED bulbs can also be used in specialized applications, and very sophisticated high power LED grow lights have shown up as a result.
LED lights have just a couple of downsides comparatively. Extremely advanced bulbs cost a good bit of money. The high cost often deters people from buying them even though they are cheaper in the long run. These grow lights for indoor plants also do not at present output as much power as their alternatives. These setups today create better results than they ever did before due to the highly specialized nature of grow lights.
